Having joined Liverpool in January 2018, van Dijk has gone from strength to strength, and is now rightly regarded as the best defender in world football, so it’s little surprise that he has a few admirers.
Writing in his weekly column for The Mirror, John Cross stated: “Do not expect it to happen for a moment, but Barcelona made enquiries about whether Virgil van Dijk could be tempted to leave Liverpool – and were quickly given short shrift by the Dutch defender’s representatives. They did not bother taking it further.”
This is music to Liverpool fan’s ears, underlining the fact that players no longer see us a stepping stone to the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Favourite for the Ballon d’Or, Virgil van Dijk is a strong contender to be a future captain at Anfield, and we have no doubt that the club would have rejected any offers that came with Klopp wanting to build his team around the defender.
We’re not worried that Barcelona came sniffing for van Dijk…he’s the best player in the world and anyone would want to have him on their team. But we love the fact van Dijk’s agent sent them away quickly.
