Writing in The Athletic, James Pearce has suggested that Joel Matip is on the verge of being offered a new contract.
With reports suggesting that Matip’s contract expires in the summer of 2020, meaning he is free to speak to European clubs in January 2020, the club are believed to be keen to tie Big Joel Matip down with a new contract.
Matip’s development over the past few months has been extraordinary… We all knew he had the potential, but now he’s actually fulfilling it. Only 28 – still a lot to come. Should be a nailed on starter alongside VvD (no debate) and a new contract is more than deserved. pic.twitter.com/8JM5cAB9f4

Pearce said: “Playing for your future tends to focus the mind. He’s out of contract at the end of the season but Liverpool are keen to reward his progress with an extension.”
There’s no doubt he’s been one of the Premier League’s elite defenders over the last 9 months, and he appears to have made that centre back spot alongside van Dijk his own this season. Whilst Gomez is likely to be the main candidate in the future, you just can’t overlook Matip’s form at the moment. And he’s added goals to his game too!
